ProtonVPN has established itself as one of the better-known privacy-focused virtual private network providers. Built by the same team that created ProtonMail and headquartered in Switzerland, ProtonVPN emphasizes user privacy, strong encryption, and transparency. Its combination of a no-logs policy, Swiss legal protections, and several technical privacy layers makes it a compelling option for users who prioritize confidentiality. Core features and technology ProtonVPN supports modern VPN protocols including WireGuard and OpenVPN, providing a balance between performance and security. WireGuard offers faster connection speeds and simpler code auditing, while OpenVPN remains a robust choice for compatibility. ProtonVPN apps are open-source, and the company has undergone independent security audits, which helps build trust in its implementation. Secure Core and routing A standout feature is Secure Core, ProtonVPN’s multi-hop routing option. With Secure Core, traffic is routed first through privacy-friendly countries (such as Switzerland and Iceland) before exiting to a public server. This design reduces the risk of traffic correlation attacks or server compromise exposing user activity. Privacy and jurisdiction Being based in Switzerland is an advantage because Swiss privacy laws are strong and the country is outside EU and US intelligence-sharing alliances. ProtonVPN states a strict no-logs policy and only retains minimal account data necessary for service provision. The Proton brand’s broader reputation for privacy (e.g., ProtonMail) reinforces user confidence. Usability and features ProtonVPN offers apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android, and supports manual configuration for routers. Features include a kill switch to block traffic if the VPN drops, split tunneling on supported platforms, P2P-friendly servers for torrenting, and Tor over VPN for easy access to the Tor network without a separate Tor browser configuration. ProtonVPN also has a free tier with limited speeds and server choices, which is useful for basic privacy needs. Performance and use cases Performance can vary depending on server load and distance, but WireGuard support helps deliver competitive speeds for streaming and large downloads. ProtonVPN is commonly used to protect privacy on public Wi-Fi, access geo-restricted content, secure P2P traffic, and add a privacy layer for journalists, activists, and everyday users. Considerations No VPN can guarantee absolute anonymity or immunity from legal orders. Users with extreme threat models should combine technical and operational practices. ProtonVPN’s paid plans unlock higher speeds, more server locations, and advanced features like Secure Core and streaming-optimized servers. Conclusion ProtonVPN is a strong choice for users seeking a privacy-first VPN backed by transparent practices, modern protocols, and a respected company with Swiss jurisdiction. Its mix of free and paid options makes it accessible for newcomers while offering advanced tools for power users.#1#
